Collect Requirements

Benchmarking involves comparing actual or planned products, processes, and practices to those of comparable organizations to identify best practices, generate ideas for improvements, and provide a basis for measuring performance. The organizations compared during benchmarking can be internal or external.

Plan Quality Management

In this it involves comparing actual or planned project practices or the projects quality standards to those of comparable projects to identify best practices, generate ideas for improvement, and provide a basis for measuring performance. Benchmarked projects may exist within the performing organizations or outside of it or can be within the same application area or the other application area. Benchmarking allows for analogies from projects in a different application area or different application area or different industries to be made.

Plan Stakeholder Engagement

The results of stakeholder analysis are compared with information for other organizations or other projects that are world class.

Application of Benchmarking in Plan Quality Management

CMMI is one of the benchmarking model used in IT, Software and other system development organizations. If an organization is assessed to CMMI at certain level, for all the projects done within the organization, the CMMI framework will become the benchmark. All applicable CMMI KPAs will be followed within the project and they will be subjected to audit. Such benchmarking will establish standardization across the projects and pave way for continuous improvements and increased delivery maturity.

A snapshot of CMMI model is presented below.
