• Ascertain the need to acquire PMP certification
• Become a PMI member by simple online enrollment at:  http://www.pmi.org/
• Though PMI membership is not mandatory for the PMP certification it is recommended to get the membership. You will get the membership ID along with a CD-ROM of PMBOK 3rd edition
• Membership is annual (129US $ for the initial membership and 119 US $ for renewals)
• While becoming a member it is suggested to also become the member of your nearest local chapter as the chapter will assist you towards PMP certification. Add local chapter subscription to the initial membership enrollment
• As a member you will receive a an year free subscription to the monthly magazine - PM Network, a quarterly research journal and monthly news letter from PMI and access to e books hosted at http://www.pmi.org/
• Also the books you buy from PMI stores will have discounts for the members
• As a member you are given access right to the electronic library through which you can access to most of the PMI publications and other reference books relating to Project Management

• From March 2002 it is mandatory to have 35 hours of formal PM education in line with PMBOK covering all process areas for qualifying to write PMP examination
• You can receive this training from any of the registered educational providers, or local chapters. Some institutes also offer web based training
• While submitting the application package for PMP exam the details of this training are to be furnished

• The examination application is now offered online. Before filling up the application keep the following details
• PMP Applications are required to document experience by each task within domains (30 tasks in 5 domains).
• A detailed split of for the 4500 hours of PM experience with project wise( name of the project, reporting line,brief description and hours split up according to a list of tasks in six domains / process groups initiation/planning/execution/controlling and closure). A sample worksheet is enclosed below
• Payment details ( credit card information)
• PMI membership ID
• You can save the information in-between and continue later
• After submission PMI will review and approve for payment
• Once approved exam fee (405 US $) may be paid
• You will get an eligibility letter within a week. This letter is valid for 12 months to appear for the examination

 (Time : 6 to 12 weeks)

• This is the key step which requires substantial investments from you
• Prepare systematically through various references
• Main focus should be on PMBOK with supporting info from other references
• Map with real time scenario while reading. The questions will not be direct. They involves sound judgement
